Hawaii ASCD was proud to host Disney's Approach to Leadership Excellence professional development in June. Over 300 education leaders from around the state participated with Disney Institute sharing leadership best practices. Hawaii ASCD has hosted this professional development in 2018, 2019 and now 2023, totaling over 700 participants over the years.
The Texas ASCD Board of Directors held its annual summer retreat in the rustic town of Kerrville, Texas. The retreat allowed board members to gather, reflect, and plan for the upcoming year. Board members left the retreat with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to Texas ASCD and its members.
Dr. Katelyn Leitner EL20 is excited to announce the release of her book entitled STEM Century: It Takes a Village to Raise a 21st Century Graduate - Suffolk, VA Edition.The stories in this book detail the importance of community leadership, data-driven decision making, division collaboration, student buy-in, and the teacher perspective.
Angello Villareal EL22 is recognized as a “Distinguished Alumni” from Uceda International by Founder Mr. Carlos Uceda and Peruvian General Consul Eduardo Lopez. Angello also hosted our eastern Leaders Meetup at Monmouth University in New Jersey August 14th and 15th, bringing together educators from across New Jersey and the country.
Tara Linney EL17 is proud to share she has built a mini workshop to help educators use Google Classroom effectively in the new school year. Grassroots Workshops hosts the mini workshop, and the registration will be open very soon. Tara has been working with educators for over 13 years, and she is excited to share this new development!
California ASCD welcomes Isaac Huang to the Board. Dr. Huang has extensive experience in meeting the academic, social emotional, and physical well being of the whole child for the past 20 years. He is also on the board of The California Association of Asian and Pacific Leaders in Education and Director of Expanded Learning Opportunities for the Fillmore School District.
Dr. Kelly Brown, founder and facilitator of the Advancing Issues Regarding Race and Equity ASCD Professional Interest Community, is promoted to Associate Professor of educational leadership in the Center for Doctoral Studies at Lamar University.with tenure at Lamar University beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.
Patrick Hausammann EL19 is selected to work on the Virginia Department of Education committee updating the state’s education technology plan. He is also selected along with Ross Keefer of Johnson-Williams Middle School, also from Clarke County Schools to be part of a yearlong professional development program integrating computer science into social studies.
Davina Williams ,EL22 is promoted to Elementary Science Coordinator with the Portsmouth, Virginia Public Schools. Previously, Davina served as Elementary Science Program Specialist and an elementary teacher for the district. Her interests are in curriculum design and instructional implementation with a passion for supporting staff for success.
Lindsay Portnoy EL15 will lead Learning & Cognitive Technologies, Augmented and Virtual Reality, and Human-Computer Interaction portfolios for the National Science Foundation’s Technology, Innovation and Partnerships directorate. Lindsay is also an America’s Seed Fund powered by NSF (also known as the NSF SBIR/STTR program) alum.
Renee Meeks EL15 is one of nine finalists for the 2023-24 Tennessee Principal of the Year award, as announced by the Tennessee Department of Education, awarded annually to a school leader for outstanding service in education and exceptional leadership that drives overall improvements in his or her school. Winners will be announced later this fall.
Sophie Teitelbaum EL21 is selected to join the 2023-2025 Associate Cohort at EdCollab, a K-12 Literacy think tank and professional development organization, working to innovate the ways educators learn together. She joins fellow EL21 Vanèe Smith-Matsalia who is also an Associate Cohort at EdCollab.
Basil Marin EL17 is proud to announce that he is appointed the new Principal of Thomas Harrison Middle School in the Harrisonburg, Virginia City Public Schools. Previously Basil had served as Principal with the Griffin-Spalding County School System and Assistant Principal with the DeKalb County School District, both in Georgia.
Courtney Carmichael EL17 is excited to announce she is the new Principal of the Midland School #1 in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. Previously, she served as Director of Elementary Education for the Westwood Regional Schools and Assistant Principal for Hillside Elementary School and she has received recognition in the areas of STEM, History and the Humanities.
Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt, former President of the ASCD Board of Directors, has been appointed Superintendent for the Alexandria City, Virginia Public Schools after serving as its interim over the past year. Previously, Melanie has helped lead Human resources for both Alexandria City and Spotsylvania County, Virginia Public Schools.
Steve Lebel, New Hampshire ASCD Board President, is starting a new position as Math Specialist at Richard Maghakian Memorial School - SAU 41. Steve also serves as a Math Reviewer at EdReports.org, and is formerly an Instructional Coach at the Amherst, New Hampshire Middle School.
ASCD contributing author Dr. Rosa Perez-Isiah is happy to announce she is appointed Assistant Superintendent for Education Services at Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in California. Previously Rosa served as Director: Elementary, Equity, and Access for the Norwalk La Mirada Unified School District.
